Completed in 1931 during the height of the Great Depression, the 381m-tall Empire State Building was the world's tallest building until the opening of the World Trade Center in 1972. Voted one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the Art Deco Empire State Building is widely considered to be the symbol of American skyscrapers.
