"Like a Candarian Zaftwing overtaking its prey, Flint and his band of renegades swooped in out of nowhere. And then, gathering up their spoils... Vanished. Without a trace."
This is the steampunk pirate spaceship captained by “the notorious Captain Nathaniel Flint” in
Treasure Planet
, Disney’s animated retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic
Treasure Island
. Flint is a dreaded pirate who preys upon the shipping lines of galactic merchant ships, along with his terrifying crew of alien pirates, most notably the dangerous-yet-charismatic cyborg Long John Silver. The ship is equipped with two masts full of red “solar sails”, sixteen plasma cannons, and a menacing array of five hydraulic arms and two massive buzz saws that specialize in ripping apart their prey. Once he has taken all he likes, Flint and his crew retreat to the stars, and deposit their booty at the legendary Treasure Planet.
This movie is an often-underrated steampunk classic, and one of my very favorites! This terrifying pirate ship makes its appearance in the movie’s opening sequence and left a lasting impression on my mind and heart, to the point that I couldn’t resist building one of my own! The ship shows up again in the finale as a broken-down wreck, which the young hero Jim Hawkins hot wires to make his escape from the exploding planet.
Fun Fact: In
Treasure Island,
Captain Flint’s ship is dubbed “The Walrus.” Somehow, that name didn’t seem to catch on for the movie. :)
I never grew out of my childhood fascination with pirates (and I never will), so I absolutely loved building this. I think this would make a great Lego set with lots of appeal for fans of pirates, aliens, steampunk, sci-fi, and Disney movies—I hope they get the chance to build it too, as an official set!
